Volunteer Opportunities at the Health and Performance Centre

The application system for volunteer positions at HPC for Summer 2012 and Fall 2012/Winter 2013 semesters is now OPEN. Please register below.

Applications for our volunteer program are accepted electronically. The deadline for the applications is April 30, 2012. We will notify applicants via email by the middle of May for the summer 2012 positions and by the end of July/beginning of August regarding fall 2012/winter 2013 positions. We request 3-5 hours per week from our volunteers. All volunteers will be required to complete an orientation, attend regular meetings and complete accessibility (AODA) training. Selection priority is given to students in their 3rd to 4th year who have taken courses in nutrition, exercise, biomechanics, anatomy and physiology.

The Health and Performance Centre (HPC) invites undergraduate students to submit an application for volunteer placements. These placements allow students to gain firsthand knowledge in the various disciplines of the HPC and put their academic knowledge into practice. Volunteer placements are available in the HPC's administrative office and various departments within the Centre (physiotherapy, chiropractic, pedorthics, fitness/nutrition, naturopath). Volunteers will be involved in clinical and research experiences and special events.

Clinical Volunteer Experience

Volunteers have the opportunity to shadow the practitioners or administrative staff. Volunteers may be given the opportunity to have direct contact with HPC clients and to assist with treatment protocols. This is a terrific way to learn more about the profession and the role of the practitioners.

Special Events
Volunteers have the opportunity to represent the HPC at health fairs, College Royal and other special events.

Research
Volunteers are asked to develop educational materials for HPC patients and to perform research for practitioners. Educational boards and pamphlets on a variety of sports injuries or health related topics are developed by volunteers and showcased within the HPC. The HPC has 2 monthly electronic newsletters that our HPC volunteers help develop. They are highly regarded and distributed within the community.

Expectations of Volunteers

Volunteer positions are a minimum of 3-5 hours per week, plus orientation, meetings and AODA training. Preference is given to students that have completed 4 or more semesters of study and have a high level of academic achievement. As a member of the HPC, it is expected that volunteers will always present themselves in a professional manner and be conscientious, reliable and punctual. Volunteers are expected to sign a consent and code of conduct arrangement. Volunteers will have the ability to develop the following personal skills while at the HPC: ability to work independently and in a group setting, ability to work with little supervision, leadership, time management, organizational, public speaking, presentation, critical thinking, writing.
