Women's Campus Safety Initiatives
The following projects were funded for 2001/2002:
Athletics Department
- to widen the stairs and improve the lighting in the stairwell between the Athletic building and the Powell building
- to purchase an antenna to improve two-way radio communication between Campus Safe Walk volunteers
- to implement findings of a safety audit at the Family and Consumer Studies building, including improved lighting and the installation of safety mirrors and emergency poles
- funding for a speaker on women's safety issues at a conference for queer youth
- support for anti-racism events during March, supporting the March 21st campaign to eliminate racism
- to support an educational campaign on women's issues leading up to and surrounding International Women's Day
- for a retreat for members of a human rights discussion group of student leaders to raise their awareness of oppression and learn how to address it on campus and in the community
- for pro-active programming for male students on male violence, violation and control toward women
- to improve the security in the Landscape Architecture building by implementing the findings of a safety audit
- to purchase two-way radios and batteries to improve communication between volunteers who provide emergency first aid care on campus
- for a pilot project for training human rights resource persons and fact-finders to support implementation of the university's human rights policy and procedures
- for safety and accessibility improvements to a wheelchair accessible washroom and to improve access by lowering elevator buttons and installing audible signals in the main library elevator
- for the purchase of two-way radios for female housekeeping staff who often work alone after hours
- to provide 3 self defence courses fo female housekeeping staff working alone after hours
- for a workshop and awareness week activities to raise awareness of the deaf and hard of hearing culture on campus
- to help stop violence against women through performances of the Vagina Monologues for the community
- to provide a workshop on safety issues for women
- a workshop on safer sex, HIV and STD's
- for a display board outside the Women's Resource Centre to provide referral information after hours and to disseminate information on issues related to women and safety
