Women's Campus Safety Initiatives

2005-2006 WCSI Projects

The 2005/2006 Women's Campus Safety Initiatives Committee was comprised of representatives from:

The Committee funded 18 initiatives this year. Grant recipients aimed to fulfil one or more of the following objectives: to improve the safety of women studying, working and living on campus; to educate and raise awareness about women's issues; to provide ongoing support to university constituents who play an integral role in improving the campus climate for women and women's safety; and to provide skill based training for women.  Based on the grant criteria, the Committee identified the the following groups as particularly in need of support: women who study or work outside regular business hours; women in non traditional fields; women who experience the multiple jeopardies of heterosexism, racism and ableism.

The Committee has provided funding to the following organizations for the initiatives described below:

Aboriginal Resource Centre

  • Aboriginal Sisters in Spirit: a project to increase awareness of violence against women in Aboriginal communities

Campus Community Police

  • cycling safety for women on campus

Centre for Couple and Family Therapy

  • safety improvements to the Centre

Fire Prevention Services

  • purchase of products to enhance the RAD programme on campus

Kemptville College

  • barn fire safety and prevention course
  • self defense course for women
  • improvements in outdoor lighting in front of student residences

Mountain Hall Council

  • white ribbon campaign to increase awareness of violence against women

Physical Resources Department

  • replacement and enhancement of lighting on Alumni Walk

Student Life and Counselling Services

  • support groups and a symposium for women of colour

Student Housing

  • production of VDay 2006: The Vagina Monologues

Women's Resource Centre

  • a women of colour support group
  • workshops on sexual and menstrual health and safety
  • resources on safety and self defense for marginalized women
