2006-2007 WCSI Projects
The 2006/07 Women's Campus Safety Initiatives Committee was comprised
of representatives from:
- Aboriginal Students Association
- Central Students Association
- Centre for Students with Disabilities
- Exempt Group
- Faculty Association
- Graduate Students Association
- Guelph Resource Centre for Gender Empowerment and Diversity
- Human Rights and Equity Office
- Interhall Council
- Munford Centre
- Campus Community Police and Fire Prevention Services
- Student Housing
- Wellness Centre
The Committee funded 11 initiatives this year. Grant recipients aimed to fulfil one or more of the following objectives: to improve the safety of women studying, working and living on campus; to educate and raise awareness about women's issues; to provide ongoing support to university constituents who play an integral role in improving the campus climate for women and women's safety; and to provide skill based training for women. Based on the grant criteria, the Committee identified the the following groups as particularly in need of support: women who study or work outside regular business hours; women in non traditional fields; women who experience the multiple jeopardies of heterosexism, racism and ableism.
The Committee has provided funding to the following organizations for the initiatives described below:
Campus Community Police and Fire Prevention Services
- installation or retrofit of emergency poles
- poster campaign on safety issues
- cycling safety
Central Students Association
- implementation of safety audit for student clubs
Child Care and Learning Centre
- installation of exterior lighting
Campus Safewalk
- installation of permanent poster holders to promote Safewalk services
- purchase of radios and jackets
Guelph Resource Centre for Gender Equality and Diversity
- guest speakers on issues of safety for women of colour
Physical Resources Department
- replacement and enhancement of outdoor lighting
Student Life and Counselling Services
- support and outreach groups for women of colour
- symposium on gender violence prevention
