Real Estate and Housing Education: An Innovative B. Comm. Program at the University of Guelph ________________________
Increasingly
real estate firms employ professionals with a thorough knowledge of all
aspects of the industry and capable of sophisticated financial analysis.
The B.Comm. in Real Estate and Housing (REH) at the
University of Guelph is designed to provide the necessary theoretical
and practical education to enable students to satisfy this need.
The Real Estate and Housing (REH) major at the University of Guelph has been facilitating professionalism in the real estate industry since 1993. The REH major is one of only two such programs
in Canada and the only one of its kind in the Province of Ontario. The
degree focuses on developing the analytical, conceptual, and management
skills required for professional careers in all sectors of the real estate industry. The REH major includes the
standard business courses found in any B. Comm. Program. These are
combined with the specific study of real estate and housing in the context of the market, economic, social, legal, and policy issues in
which the industry operates. Students learn about appraisal, real estate finance, property management, real estate market analysis, urban economics and real estate law.
Graduates of the REH program have been successful
in securing employment in many sectors of the real estate
industry including investment analysis, residential and commercial property management, housing
construction, land and
commercial property development, real estate appraisal and sales, and
housing and real estate research.
A co-op option is available in the REH
major. Students work in the industry for two eight month work terms, one
after the fourth academic semester and one after the sixth. Co-op
education allows students to gain valuable work experience in the
‘real world’ and helps in defining their career goals.
