Brief Biography
Originally from British Columbia, Kerry has been involved in higher education primarily in the UK for the past 20 years. He completed his undergraduate education in Canada before pursuing his graduate studies in the UK. He began lecturing in the area of tourism planning and development at Oxford Brookes University, where he was also program leader for two tourism master’s programs and overall director of graduate programs in the School of the Built Environment. He was also Series Editor of the Oxford Planning Monographs for 10 years, an external examiner in Hospitality and Tourism at the University of Ulster, and former Chair and Executive Member of the Vale of Evesham Tourism Association. Since 2000, much of his work has been geared towards university administration and management, and from 2004-2008 he was the dean of the faculty of business and leisure at the UHI Millennium Institute in the Scottish Highlands, a federation of colleges and research institutes working to create the University of the Highlands and Islands.
In addition to his various roles in education, Kerry has also been a non-executive company director for two companies focussed on supporting entrepreneurial innovation and research development in the north of Scotland. He has served on numerous advisory panels and steering groups concerned with business education and enterprise productivity. His professional experience has primarily focused on Europe with project activity in the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Cyprus, Malta, Finland, Canada and Thailand. Since the early ‘90s, he has acted as an occasional advisor on tourism development and management for the Cultural Heritage Division of the Council of Europe. His 2nd book, the Tourism Development Handbook is a core text in a number of educational programmes around the world, and has recently been translated into Chinese and Italian.
