Current Position
Assistant Professor and Undergraduate Academic Advisor for the Hotel and Food Administration (HAFA) and Tourism Management (TMGT) majors of the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm.) program.
Brief Biography/Comments
Valerie was born in Belleville , Ontario but received most of her public and high school education in Oakville , Ontario and considers it her home town. She first visited the University of Guelph campus as a child when her family came to her father’s OAC ’49 reunions every 5 years. After finishing her undergraduate degree at Guelph Valerie worked as a Food Consultant for Agriculture Canada in Ottawa where she did recipe testing, wrote consumer food publications, press releases and conducted some sensory evaluation research. Her Master’s thesis at the University of Manitoba compared energy consumption and food quality of various foods cooked in pre-heated and non preheated ovens. While finishing her thesis she worked on an energy conservation project for the foodservice industry. Valerie taught in the Department of Consumer Studies (now Marketing and Consumer Studies) before joining the faculty of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in 1990. She and her husband Bob have a teenage daughter Amy and a grown son Toby.
Teaching
Valerie has taught the Introductory Foods (HTM*2700) in both the fall and winter semesters since 1986.
Other Responsibilities in the School
In addition to teaching the Introductory Foods course Valerie is also the HTM Undergraduate Academic Advisor assisting students with issues related to their academic studies in the HAFA and Tourism Management majors. She also assists with exchange students.
Committee Memberships
Valerie is a member of the HTM Awards Committee, the HTM Admissions Committee, the Health & Safety Committee for the HTM Building and Macdonald Institute, the B.Comm. Program Committee and the B.Comm. Academic Review Sub-Committee.
