Profile

I studied Biology at the University of Saskatchewan as an undergrad, with an emphasis on ecology. After reading a paper in the New Yorker, I was galvanized to save the world's forests. At the University of Alberta, I took a M.Sc. in Forest Science, but while I was there, a paper about mycorrhizas aborted a career in tree physiology. For my PhD, I studied arbuscular mycorrhizas at Guelph, followed by a post doc in environmental biology.

Research

I am a microbial ecologist. I look at various types of microbes, in various contexts. Right now, I’m interested in microbial gastronomy – or how microbial ecology plays a role in the development of wine and many of the foods we eat. I’m also interested in the role of microbes restoration ecology and sustainable agriculture. I use molecular tools to characterize and track microbes in food and in the environment. I am presently recruiting graduate students. Please see advert below.
