The University of Guelph has seen its total research revenue increase by 73 percent since 1997/98 to $137.7 million in 2007/08.
Researchers at the University of Guelph attract funding from a broad range of sponsors for fundamental and applied research. Research activity spans the province with main campus, regional colleges and research stations involving 5000+ trust funds, 300+ sponsors and 1000+ research-supported graduate students.

The University of Guelph conducts its research activities with a focused strategic\thematic approach recognizing the linkages between disciplines. These include, but are not limited to, a) environment, ecology and biodiversity b) agriculture and food c) physical and biological structure; function, dynamics and interactions d) health and well-being and e) societies in transition: past, present and future.
Over the last five years, there has been a shift in the focus of research funding with a 30% increase in curiosity driven research. The University of Guelph has 130+ years of expertise in the creation and transfer of knowledge with world class expertise in broad range of disciplines.

The University expects its research revenue to increase substantially through its enhanced partnership reached in 1997 with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).
This enhanced partnership relocated 400 employees to a new, 86,000‑square‑foot research complex on campus, and made the University responsible for Ontario's agricultural colleges at Ridgetown, Kemptville and Alfred, and for the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario and veterinary medicine, research and regulatory laboratories in Guelph.
The University of Guelph Research Park provides first-class research facilities and offices for agribusiness, animal health and molecular design companies while helping Canadian companies tap into Guelph's research strengths.

Guelph is among the most successful universities in attracting research funding from the country's federal research granting councils.
In 2007-08, Guelph was awarded in excess of $3.0M from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). University of Guelph faculty were significantly more successful in competing for SSHRC awards and funding compared to the national average for comprehensive universities. Guelph’s per capita funding exceeded the national average by 63%.
Faculty Excellence
In 2007-08, U of G faculty successfully competed for in excess of $26M of research funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). And the Canadian Instititutes for Health Research (CIHR).
University of Guelph faculty were significantly more successful in competing for NSERC/CIHR awards and funding compared to the national average for comprehensive universities. Guelph’s per capita funding exceeded the national average by 24%.

Quality of Graduate Admissions
U of G graduate students are more successful than those of most Canadian universities in securing funding from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). In addition, Guelph graduates are more successful than their provincial counterparts in attracting Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS).

Faculty Excellence ‑ National Competitiveness
Guelph is developing strategic partnerships in its areas of research strength, ranging from the basic to the applied. The University of Guelph has achieved a high rate of success in recent competitions for research capacity-building funding from both the federal and provincial governments. These competitions include the Canada Foundation of Innovation and the Canada Research Chairs Program at the federal level as well as the SuperBuild , Research Performance Envelope, Research and Development Challenge Funds and Ministry of Research and Innovation Programs at the provincial level.
