Restoration work under way on front entrance

Repairs to the OVC main building sparked some lunch-hour excitement on Monday as fire alarms sent faculty, staff and students out into the parking lot.

Contractors removing old paint and grime from the eaves and soffits inadvertently caused the smoke that set off the alarms. Work began last week on the project, funded by the university’s Department of Physical Resources, to repair and/or replace the soffits, eaves and facia on the main building.

Meanwhile, the first stages of work are under way in an effort to restore the front entrance of the College to its former glory.

The project is being funded in part by OVC alumni and currently involves fresh paint and new flooring in the hallway from the Learning Commons to the Biomedical Sciences doorway. Future upgrades may include opening up the ceiling to its former height to expose original architectural features, works of art on the walls, repairs to the front stairs, improved access, and a recognition wall for donors, volunteers and distinguished alumni.

“A number of our alumni suggested that we need to project an image that is more indicative of the great strides we have made in recent few years into new and exciting areas of veterinary medicine,” said Dr. Elizabeth Stone, OVC dean.

“Thanks to our alumni, we will be able to revitalize our front entrance and project a positive first impression for our many special guests and visitors to the College, as well as create a more welcoming environment for the OVC community.”
