Research and teaching in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science revolve around the sciences relevant to animal development, productivity and wellbeing with a focus on farm animal species that is broadening to accommodate companion and zoo animals. 

Attracting $6-7 million in research grants each year, the department conducts research in the disciplines of nutrition, physiology, behavior, breeding and genetics and molecular biology and leads four Centers of Excellence recognized for expertise in Nutrition Modeling, Animal Breeding and Genetics, Animal Welfare, and Aquaculture.  It hosts two Canada Research Chairs – Integrative Modelling of Biological Systems and Food Animal Behaviour and Welfare. 

Faculty have a leadership role in the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare and the new partnership gained by the Ontario Agricultural College to establish the Egg Farmers of Canada Research Chair in Poultry Welfare.
