Financial SupportDoctoral students are strongly urged to apply for SSHRC doctoral fellowships, Ontario graduate scholarships, and other external sources of funding; the Joint PhD Program will provide advice and assistance to in-course students in the preparation of optimal applications. The Joint PhD Program will ensure that normally all students admitted to the program will be fully funded, through graduate teaching, research assistantships, and scholarships, for a maximum of four years, taking any external awards into account. Doctoral students are also eligible for numerous internal awards and prizes. At Guelph, these include needs-based ACCESS awards and entrance scholarships, graduate teaching awards at the school, college, and university levels, the Leslie Nielsen Dramatic Arts Scholarship, as well as other College of Arts awards. At Wilfrid Laurier University graduate students are likewise eligible for entrance scholarships, Teaching Assistantships, incentive scholarships and bursaries; students registered at Laurier may also apply for the International Student's Scholarship, the President's Scholarship and the annual PhD Dissertation Award. Research & Funding OpportunitiesInternal AwardsGraduate Awards, School of English and Theatre Studies Travel Funds For Research and ConferencesExternal AwardsSocial Sciences and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellowships (SSHRC)The SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship Program aims to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly- qualified academic personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of schol- arly achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities. These are awarded through an annual competition for students who are either Canadian citizens or permanent residents living in Canada at the time of application. The Doctoral Fellowships, currently valued at $16, 620 per year, are tenable at recognized universities in Canada or abroad from the first to fourth years (inclusive) of doctoral study, with a range in duration from six to 48 months. Applicants need not be assured of admission to a program at the time of application, but at the time of taking up the award must have completed either a masters degree or at least one year of doctoral study, and be pursuing either full-time studies leading to a PhD or equiva- lent, or an LLM degree or equivalent. For more information please check the SSHRC website. Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)These are awarded through an annual competition for students. (NOTE: OGS eligibility regulations are subject to change. ) There are two competitions:
Eligible applicants must have at least an A- average (first-class standing) in each of the last two years of full-time study or equiv- alent part-time study, as of the September of application. Eligible undergraduate students must apply in the September that is at least eight months prior to the tenure of the award. Continuing graduate students must apply in the September before receiving an award for the second year of a masters program or any of the first five years of a doctoral program. Students registered at an Ontario university must apply for an OGS through the appropriate awards office at the university where they are currently registered and follow its procedures and deadline dates for application submission; students should investigate this opportunity early in September. For more information please check the OGS website. Student LoansThe Canadian federal and provincial governments provide loans for undergraduate and graduate education to Canadians and permanent residents (subject to minimum residency requirements). These funds are not available to international students. Students should review the student loan policies of their home province; student loan information is normally available through universities, but students should note that provincial loan forms and initial application procedures may only be available through a students home province. BursariesSome agencies, clubs and private organizations provide student bursaries for members and their immediate families; students should review what is available through any of these organizations. |
