History

The above slideshows represent some of the rich history of potato research at Guelph. The archival data slides are copies of reports dating back to the 1890s. If you look closely, you can see details such as the varieties tested, their yields, and attributes. One report from early 1900s indicates that over 4000 (yes, four thousand!) Ontario farmers were conducting agricultural research on their own farms. They were the scientists of their time. Also notable is the beautiful penmanship, which was essential.

The photos from the 1930s through 1960s were collected from the archives. They have been categorized according to my best estimate, but much remains unknown about the subjects. Any additional information about the people in the pictures, or the locations and machinery would be very much appreciated. Please contact Vanessa Currie vcurrie@uoguelph.ca.
