Choosing Guelph

The University of Guelph is an internationally top-ranked university with both Biological Science and Agriculture colleges. The Plant Science program crosses college boundaries to bring the full range of plant science programming to students. Students in Plant Sciences, who graduate with a B.Sc. degree, have the freedom to merge studies in botany, ecology and agriculture in a way that best suits their interests. The breadth -- and the opportunities -- are unique in undergraduate Plant Sciences programs.

The Plant Science Major will help you investigate the many wonders of plants and prepare you to become a leader in the field of plant science. You will explore the intricacies of plant diversity, growth and development, plant-environment interactions, advances in molecular biology, and the wide variety of economic uses for plants. You will study these areas alongside one of the largest concentrations of plant scientists in Canada.

Plant Agriculture

The Department of Plant Agriculture is one of the largest agriculture departments in North America with a heritage strongly rooted in crop and horticultural sciences. In addition to our crop and horticultural roots of activities in addition encompassing applied bioinformatics; molecular genetics; genomics; field horticultural and greenhouse crops; plant breeding; turf and grassland studies; environmental sustainability; and the use of biomaterials for food, health products, fibres and industrial products. Research is conduct in well equipped lab facilities and field research on a broad range of plant species on Research Stations on varying soil and environments throughout southern Ontario.

Integrative Biology

The Department of Integrative Biology is comprised of over 30 faculty members in three overlapping divisions: Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Animal Physiology. The department is strongly committed to excellence in teaching and research. Research is focused on a wide variety of organisms (from microbes to plants to animals) at multiple levels of organization (from molecules and cells through to entire ecosystems). Basic research is being used as a foundation to address some of the most important regional and global issues.

School of Environmental Sciences

The School of Environmental Sciences (SES), formed in 2009 through the merger of the departments of Land Resource Science and Environmental Biology, integrates physical and life sciences to address environmental issues in agricultural, forest and aquatic ecosystems. Probing new and vital areas of study amid regional and global environmental change, SES research and teaching integrate entomology, toxicology, microbiology and pathology and examine interactions between organisms and their environment and the physical aspects of land as a resource.
