We Change The World

Have you ever wanted to make a difference in the world and help make this a better planet? A group of students at the University of Guelph decided to give it a try. Using creativity and a couple of video cameras, they set out to tell the story of the everyday heroes on our campus. Through this project, they hoped to break down the barriers that hold people back from making a difference and inspire each of us to do our part to make this a better planet.

Anthony Ngai, Ben Hayes and Derek Alton will share their story of how they created We Change the World and the Small Actions Big Change Movement. Come prepared to be inspired and make a difference.

How poems and novels promise a better world

U of G English professor Dionne Brand discusses how poems and novels promise a better world. Brand is Toronto's poet laureate. She has won the Griffin Poetry Prize, the Governor General's Award for Poetry, the Trillium Prize for Literature, the Pat Lowther Award for Poetry, the Harbourfront Festival Prize and the Toronto Book Award. Her writing has been translated into Italian and French, and is published in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany.

Forum on HIV/AIDS in Africa

Numbers don't tell the entire story when it comes to Africa's AIDS pandemic. President Alastair Summerlee hosted a forum on HIV/AIDS in Africa that provides a much more in-depth picture of the crisis, featuring stories from doctors and volunteers on the front lines. This forum was an opportunity to hear those stories and begin the work of translating them into much-needed change. At stake is our ability to listen to and understand the principles and values required to address this pandemic.

Lincoln Alexander Outstanding Leader Award

The second annual Lincoln Alexander Outstanding Leader Award was presented to the Honourable Frank McKenna, P.C., O.N.B., Q.C., former Premier of New Brunswick and Canadian Ambassador to the United States in recognition of his commitment as a leader who embodies the core values of the Centre for Studies in Leadership (CSL): collaboration, scholarship, advocacy, service, and learning. The event was hosted by the CSL and had, in attendance, a number of distinguished leaders from the public, private, and educational sectors.

Winter Convocation 2007

February 19-22, War Memorial Hall

James Lockyer, the criminal lawyer currently defending Steven Truscott in the 1959 murder conviction before the Ontario Court of Appeal, received an honorary degree during the University of Guelph’s winter convocation Feb. 19 to 22 in War Memorial Hall.

The University also presented honorary degrees to Andrew Pipe, a medical doctor instrumental in founding the Canadian Centre for Ethics; Christopher Somerville, a groundbreaking plant scientist; and Gabriel Tsampalieros, a Canadian business leader. In addition, retired sociology professor Lynn McDonald will be named University professor emerita. More information.

Antoni Cimolino Lecture

January 29, 12 p.m., Room 1714 of OVC's Lifetime Learning Centre

This was the inaugural talk in the Leadership Speaker Series hosted by the Centre for Studies in Leadership and was free and open to the public. Antoni Cimolino was the Stratford Festival’s executive director prior to his appointment as general director in 2006. He has directed dozens of acclaimed productions, including last year’s Coriolanus with Colm Feore and Martha Henry. Cimolino began his career as an actor, first appearing at Stratford in 1988. He has played lead roles in Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet. More information.
