Academus Enterprise Web Portal

Academus Portal includes the framework, software, and services to establish an online campus and provide a single, user-friendly web-based interface

Academus Features

Academus Channels

Deployed with a set of pre-built channels that are fully supported by Unicon, Academus allows each institution to rapidly deploy a feature- rich solution to their entire campus community.

Built-in Authentication

Supports multiple authentication options to meet the needs of your campus. Your portal can be configured for database authentication or integrated with an existing authentication server (such as LDAP).

Campus Community

Supports the creation and maintenance of online campus communities through the portal’s group capabilities. The collaborative features delivered with Academus allow information to be targeted to these groups and facilitate simple communication among group members.

Integration With Other Campus Resources

Integrate multiple campus resources via a single gateway through custom channels, single sign-on capabilities to existing campus systems, and lower-level data integration.

Open-Source Channels

Easily incorporate open-source uPortal channels available in the JA-SIG clearinghouse or developed by other higher education institutions into your Academus Portal solution.

Built on uPortal

Built on JA-SIG's open technology – the uPortal framework. Academus' use of this framework allows each institution to develop its own custom channels independently or with the help of our Unicon professional services organization.

Personalization

Enables each campus constituent to personalize his or her own instance of the Academus portal. The ability to modify the tabs and channels displayed, as well as customize the information within individual channels puts users in control of their online experience.

Academus Channels

Personal Channels

These premium channels help your users be more organized:

Address Book

The Address Book Channel integrates with the virtual campus and allows users to create and manage lists of contacts and groups. The Address Book integrates with multiple channels such as the Calendar and Webmail channels.

Bookmarks

The Bookmarks Channel holds a personalized list of URL links. Similar to "Favorites" on most browsers, the Bookmarks channel makes a user's unique links accessible from any computer connected to the Internet.

Calendar

The Calendar Channel helps users maintain their schedule, create to-do lists, manage lists of invitations and attendees, and prioritize entries. The Event and To-Do Channels work in conjunction with the Calendar Channel, providing summary views of today's events and pending action items. Users can create multiple calendars, including private and shared versions, as well as custom composite views of multiple calendars. The Calendar Channel is fully integrated with the Address Book.

My Notes

The My Notes Channel lets users maintain a personal set of notes or reminders.

WebMail

The Webmail client connects to all IMAP or POP3-compliant e-mail servers, allowing users to read and compose e-mail through the portal. The Webmail client can also collect mail from other commercially available e-mail systems such as Yahoo! e-mail. With this level of integration, the Webmail channel may be one of the most used channels in the portal. Webmail is also integrated with your Campus Directory and the Address Book channel.

Collaboration Channels

These channels help your users collaborate more effectively online:

Briefcase

The Briefcase Channel provides a place to upload and store files of all types in a manageable directory. This channel also provides collaborative and portfolio capabilities by allowing a user to share a folder and its contents with other selected portal users.

Classifieds

The Classifieds Channel is an online version of newspaper classifieds ads. Users can post personal items for sale, apartments for rent, or job listings. Viewers can see details of the ad by simply clicking on it. The channel includes an administrative workflow function that allows your institution to review ads before posting.

Discussion Forums

The Discussion Forums Channel provides a threaded-discussion forum useful for informal information exchange within the campus community. Users can attach files and include links within posts, track read/unread posts, archive, sort, and search discussion threads.

Group Chat

The Group Chat Channel provides real-time collaboration for portal members interested in a common topic. It supports basic chat room administration features such as controlling access. Advanced capabilities including white boarding and instant messaging. Administrators can assign access rights and granular level permissions based on group memberships.

Campus Channels

These channels help your institution create, maintain, and distribute information and services to targeted user groups:

Campus Announcements

The Campus Announcements Channel allows users with proper access privileges to publish announcements on a campus-wide or group basis. If the announcement is targeted at a particular group, only the members of that group can view the information.

Campus News

The Campus News Channel is an online version of the campus newspaper. Users can subscribe to campus news articles for topics according to their interests. Your institution's news staff can keep users up to date with campus as well as local, national, and world news.

Notifications

The Notifications Channel displays communications to individual users or groups. Notifications are fully integrated with the Calendar and Survey channels and are visible from anywhere within the portal.

Survey

The Survey Channel provides comprehensive support for defining, conducting and managing surveys, polls, elections and analyzing results. Surveys can be distributed to a group or individual users as specified by the author.
