Uniting to Change Lives, Improve Life

It's hard to believe, but the start of the new academic year is only a few weeks away. As summer winds down, it's a great time to both look ahead and to do little reflecting.

I always count among my blessings the continued commitment from the people who make U of G and the City of Guelph such a wonderful place to work and live.

But for many of our neighbours, living is not so easy — in summertime or any other time of the year. As chair of this year's United Way campaign for Guelph and Wellington County, I'm particularly aware that others around me have unmet needs and wants.

Every year, more than 60,000 people in our community use a variety of social, health and economic services provided by the United Way. I'm amazed that so many people are helped this way in our region.

But what is also amazing is how the community comes together to support these activities. Last year, the Guelph and Wellington County United Way campaign raised more than $2.6 million. That money went to more than 40 community agencies providing vital programs intended to strengthen our community and make its members healthier and safer.

Meeting the needs in our community requires a commitment from all of us. It's a challenge, but by working together, we can make a difference. The University community plays a vital role in the annual United Way campaign. Our campaign success is pivotal to the city's campaign because we are a major employer in the area.

Luckily, we have a culture of giving on this campus, recognizing our responsibilities in helping our friends, colleagues and community members who are in need. I am always amazed and humbled by the efforts of the U of G community during our United Way campaign.

Every year we push our target a little bit higher, and each year we surpass it. Last year, students, faculty and staff raised more than $441,000, exceeding the university's campaign goal by more than $41,000.

Indeed, the annual United Way announcement is one of my proudest moments as president. It demonstrates in a tangible way the community spirit and caring of University employees and students.

This year, we plan to push the bar higher than ever — setting our most aggressive fund-raising target ever. I hope that you will join me at the University's campaign kick off in the fall as we once again unite to change lives and improve life.
