30,000,000 Canadians,
30,000,000 bracelets,
Villages of African women with a means of support,
Upwards of $100,000,000 to build a national response to an international crisis:
Canada could help save Lesotho. We could model in that country what ought to be happening throughout the continent.
In September, 2006, the students at the University of Guelph began selling red and white beaded bracelets. The bracelets sold quickly. Sourced from a rural women's cooperative in Eshowe, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, the bracelets provide much needed employment income for the women and their families. The Inina Craft Agency was established as a poverty relief project.
Every one of their bracelets is handmade. One woman can make 50 bracelets a day, earning enough to keep her children fed and pay school fees for one month. Each $5 bracelet helps sustain these families and contributes more than $4 to the larger Masai for Africa Campaign.
The Bracelet of Hope initiative is truly a grassroots movement.
Its modest goal: Raise $1,000,000 for OHAfrica.
Its dream: Raise $100,000,000 for Lesotho.
