Re-imagining the Undergraduate Learning Experience
November 14, 2005
Today I am releasing a White Paper, “The Lighting of a Fire: Re-imagining the Undergraduate Learning Experience,” which articulates a vision of possibilities for enhancing the quality of a Guelph education. It is a “re-imagining” because if we are to build on our successes and move toward the next level of achievement, we need to understand the assumptions and conceptual frameworks that guide our teaching and learning efforts, and be willing to reshape them if necessary. More than anything else, this document is an invitation to join a whole-campus dialogue on how we should approach undergraduate learning.

From the days of Making change to the times of Making choices
Since its inception, the University of Guelph has been actively engaged in strategic planning. In 1995, with the publication of the strategic plan Making Change in 1995, the University began a process to revitalize its mission and purpose. The initial intent was to focus resources and provide opportunities to strengthen our mission strategic investment in areas of growth and areas of strength. Shortly after the publication of Making Change there was a significant downturn in provincial support for universities in Ontario accompanied by significant increases in tuition fees. Any goodwill and resources stored for revitalization and reinvestment was allocated to dealing with the budget shortfall. Despite this major setback, or perhaps because of it, the spirit of innovation at Guelph was not daunted and the University progressively rose in national and international reputation.

Integrated Planning at the University of Guelph
A Framework for Making Choices
Guelph's position as a leading university is the direct result of careful academic planning. A fine example of this success is the strategic, multi-year effort mounted to respond to the double cohort—an effort which has drawn praise both from within and outside the university sector. We should definitely congratulate ourselves on this performance. But unfortunately, it is not yet time to relax.
