Applying to Guelph

The Office of Graduate Studies has implemented a new process whereby transcript and reference documentation in support of an online application via the OUAC will be electronically uploaded.  Once an application is submitted with payment the file will be turned over to the University of Guelph.  Within 1-7 days the applicant and referees will receive an email with instructions regarding the new electronic uploading process.

Psychology- Graduate Program at Guelph

 

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to one field of study only. Please note that admission to one does not preclude conducting research with faculty members affiliated with another.  IF you are considering two fields of study we would ask you first contact the Faculty Admission Representatives of each field of study to discuss your research intent in order to decide the "best fit" for YOU.

Required Documents to Accompany an Admission Application to Psychology

  • completion and submission of the OUAC online application to the Department of Psychology with payment no later than the deadline of the field of study being pursued.
  • transcripts of all universities noted within the "Academic Background" of the online application
  • min. of 2 academic references listed within the online application (online application permits max. of 3 references)
  • if you are pursuing our CP:ADE field of study, you are to manually present any referee who can speak to your ability as a clinician the Psychology Department - Clinical Psychology Applied Developmental Emphasis - Supplemental Letter of Recommendation (found below)
  • our Psychology Department Graduate Studies Admission Questionnaire (found below)
  • CV
  • GRE score report(s), if applicable
  • Evidence of English Language Proficiency, if applicable
 

Complete The OUAC Online Application

 

Once you have created your Compass Account with the OUAC (Ontario Universitys' Application Centre), remember to jot down your login and password or print the screen and keep in a safe place.  If you forget or misplace, you must contact the OUAC directly for assistance. Upon submission of your application, please print a copy of the "submission summary" (application in full), for your records.  

 

 

Application Fee: currently $100 (CDN) payable on submission of the online application (this may change without notice as collected by the OUAC). There may be a further charge at the discretion of the home university for each electronic transcript request.

 

Please note:

  1. Once you submit your application with payment you will no longer be able to access to edit.
  2. It may take 12-48 hours for the OUAC to confirm your payment, thus it is important that you monitor your email.
  3. Your banking/credit card may indicate payment to the "OUAC - Guelph" ...they have an office in Guelph (Stone Rd.)...do not confuse entries as being specifically for an application to the University of Guelph.

*Our Neuroscience and Applied Cognitive Science field of study participates in the Collaborative Neuroscience and Collaborative Toxicology programs.  Applicants have the option of choosing 1 Collaborative program at the time of application or if offered admission may do so later. Interested applicants should contact the Faculty Admission Representative for this field of study or the faculty member they wish to work with to discuss in advance of submitting their application.

Admission: Full-Time to the Fall Semester ONLY.

 

GRE & English Language Proficiency : Please enter the respective date(s) you took or are registered to take the test(s). No need to enter your scores.

  • GRE  requirements vary depending on the field of study (AS, CP:ADE, I/O, NACS) and program (MA, MSc, PhD) to which you are applying.
  • NACS: Neither the general or subject GRE scores are required for admission consideration to their MSc or PhD programs.
  • AS, I/O, CP:ADE: Both general and subject in psychology GRE scores are required for admission consideration to their MA program.
  • CP:ADE, I/O: Both general and subject in psychology GRE scores are required for admission consideration to their PhD program.
  • AS: Neither the general or subject in psychology GRE scores are required for admission consideration to their PhD program.

  • Ensure that you have taken any required GRE or English Language Proficiency Standardized Test, in advance of your application deadline.
  • Due to the fact that ETS offers only 3 sittings of the GRE Subject Test per year, it is imperative that if a requirement of the field of study you are pursuing, that you pre-register in time for a test that will produce the delivery of a score report to you no later than your application deadline.

E-mail Address: Please ensure that this email will be active and monitored from the date of application through June.  IF your application proceeds to an offer of admission and you are presented with a U of G email account, it is imperative that you monitor this account on a regular basis, as it is the ONLY one the Office of Graduate Studies will use to communicate via.

 

Type of Study: Thesis-based ONLY

 

Academic Background: Please enter each university-level institution you have attended. You must provide information of ALL university level institutions you have attended and/or are currently attending, whether you have completed or not. Start with the program you are currently enrolled in or the most recently completed one.

 

Transcripts: An applicant (excludes a currently registered U of G applicant) has the option of requesting an electronic transcript from participating Ontario Universities ONLY.  Please note, they may charge you.  IF they have, it will be added to your application fee. The applicant will be responsible for scanning and uploading ALL transcripts noted in the Academic Background to their application. Within 1-7 days, the applicant will receive an email from the Office of Graduate Studies with a login in and password to upload copies of ALL transcripts (including the grading legend pg. for ea.) ...it is expected that the applicant will have their transcripts ready in advance so that they may upload immediately upon receipt of the email notification....please ensure that your PDF is readable BEFORE uploading ;)   An applicant who requested electronic transcript(s) within the OUAC application is NOT required to upload...these will be automatically uploaded upon receipt from the university requested...once received you will be able to confirm via your WebAdvisor checklist (give it at least a few days).

 

Referees:  The online application allows you to enter a maximum of 3 referees.  A minimum of 2 referees are required for an application.  The Department of Psychology requests that a minimum of 2 referees be ACADEMIC (with the exception of an applicant who has been long out of school). It is imperative that you provide each referee with your application deadline as within 1 - 7 days following submission of your online application with payment to the OUAC, ALL referees listed within will receive an email from the Office of Graduate Studies with information as to completion and submission of their electronic reference. These referees will receive auto email "nudges" every 14 days until submitted. As each submits, you will be able to confirm via your WebAdvisor checklist.

 

**IF you wish to submit more than the 3 permitted within the online application, they must be the "old fashion way". Please forward any additional referee the University of Guelph Assessment Of An Applicant For Graduate Studies form. Once again, when doing so please remind them of your application deadline and that submission will be directly to the Graduate Secretary in Psychology.

 

**An applicant (including those who have been long out of school) is also welcome to submit non-academic references (no minimum or maximum), AS LONG AS they speak to the field of study being pursued. Once again, when doing so please remind them of your application deadline and that submission will be directly to the Graduate Secretary in Psychology.

 

**IF you are an applicant to our Clinical Psychology: Applied Developmental Emphasis field of study, please forward to any referee who can speak to your ability as a clinician our Psychology Department - Clinical Psychology: Applied Developmental Emphasis - Supplemental Letter of Recommendation .  Once again, when doing so please remind them of your application deadline and that submission will be directly to the Graduate Secretary in Psychology.

Psychology Department Graduate Studies Admission Questionnaire and CV

  • This questionnaire is a required by the Department of Psychology.
  • Please indicate your proposed program and field of study.
  • It is strongly recommended (though not mandatory) that you contact potential research advisors and identify them in Q. #3
  • Your major research interests and your objectives in undertaking graduate study (a.k.a. statement of interest) are to be addressed in Q. #4, thus is is NOT necessary for you to enter within the online application with the OUAC.  There is no limit to page length or number but suffice it to say that it should only be as long as it needs to be as your ability to write may be critiqued.
  • In Q. #5 invites you to describe your research, work (which would include volunteer-work) and teaching experiences.
  • It is expected that an applicant will have this questionnaire and their current CV completed in advance of submitting their online application with payment to the OUAC, in order to submit immediately upon receipt of an email from The Office of Graduate Studies acknowledging receipt of your application.
