Professional Development Allowance

GRADUATE STUDENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ALLOWANCE

The Department recognizes that students incur expenses as part of their graduate training (e.g., books, materials, professional memberships, journal subscriptions) and has established the Graduate Professional Development Allowance to cover some of these expenses. Mandatory university charges (e.g., PhD application fees, graduation fees) are excluded.
Amount: $150.00 per fiscal year for Ph.D. students and $100 per fiscal year for M.A. students (the Department's fiscal year runs from May 1 to April 30).

Eligibility: All graduate students who are enrolled full-time and within the funding limits of their program of studies, (i.e. 9 semesters for the PhD and 6 semesters for the MA).

Process: Eligible students may make one claim in each fiscal year. Students are asked to accumulate receipts/expenses and submit them when they total $100 or $150.00. All claims must be accompanied by supporting documentation including original receipts ( no photocopies). Claims should be submitted to the secretary who handles departmental finances.

Option: Groups of students may pool their Professional Development Allowances to make a single large purchase. Also, students may choose to use their professional development allowance to defray thesis, practicum, or conference travel costs.

GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE TRAVEL ALLOWANCE

Graduate Students are strongly encouraged to conduct research and to report it at scientific conferences (as well as to publish it). They are also strongly encouraged to develop their clinical, applied, or research skills by attending external training conferences and institutes where appropriate. The Department has established the Graduate Conference Travel Allowance to cover travel, registration, and accommodations to help defray the costs for such activities.

Amount: $250.00 per fiscal year for a first-author presentation of a paper at a conference or to attend a training workshop that is directly relevant to a students program of studies. The fiscal year is May 1 to April 30.

Eligibility: All graduate students who are enrolled full-time and within the funding limits of their program of studies (i.e. 9 semesters for the PhD and 6 semesters for the MA). Students who attend workshops will require a letter from their MA or PhD adviser explaining the necessity of attendance. Only first authors of conference papers are eligible.

Process: Eligible students may make one claim in each fiscal year. Eligible expenses include travel,  registration, and accommodation expenses. Meals and per diem expenses are not eligible. All claims must be accompanied by supporting documentation including original receipts (no photocopies). Claims should be submitted to the secretary who handles departmental finances. Students may apply to the GSC if they anticipate that cost of their travel will exceed the amount allocated by the Department. Such requests must be submitted before the travel takes place and accompanied by a detailed budget which includes a written guarantee that a substantial portion of the request (50 percent or more) will be covered by other sources of funding (e.g.., by the thesis advisor). Requests for extra travel funding will be considered on an individual basis and take into account the justification for the extra funds and the current budgetary situation in the Department. Only a small number of requests will be granted and the amount of extra funding will be limited (e.g., not more than $200).

GRADUATE STUDENT THESIS RESEARCH ALLOWANCE

Funds are often required for thesis research and the Department has established the Graduate Thesis Research Allowance to cover some of these expenses. The allowance is $200 for MA Thesis research and $300 for PhD Thesis research. These awards are eligible for students at all semester levels. Students should consult with their supervisors early in the development of the research proposal about the costs of conducting their proposed research and how those costs will be paid. Faculty are strongly encouraged to support the research of their students from their research grants.

Amount: $200 for an MA Thesis research and $300 for PhD Thesis Research.

Eligibility: All enrolled MA and PhD students in psychology may apply.

Process: Eligible expenses include research materials, research related travel, and photocopying. All claims must be accompanied by supporting documentation including original receipts (no photocopies). Claims should be submitted to the secretary who handles departmental finances. Students may apply to the GSC if they anticipate that cost of their thesis research will exceed the amount allocated by the Department. Such requests must be made before the research takes place and be accompanied by a detailed budget which includes a written guarantee that a substantial portion of the request (50 percent or more) will be covered by other sources of funding (e.g.., by the thesis advisor). Note that requests for extra thesis research funding will be considered on an individual basis and take into account the justification for the extra funds and the current budgetary situation in the Department. Only a small number of requests will be granted and the amount of extra funding will be limited (e.g., not more than $200)

Thesis Photocopying

The Department will pay for one photocopy of the thesis for each member of the MA and PhD Examination Committees (i.e., 3 copies for the MA and 4 for the PhD). The department will also pay for two copies of the final versions of MA and PhD Theses required by the Office of Graduate Studies.

The department will not pay for any prior drafts of the thesis, nor for copies of the thesis proposal, nor for photocopies of written work reviewed in preparing the thesis. Such photocopying expenses can be covered as part of the Graduate Thesis Research Allowance or the Graduate Professional Allowance. Students are not to use departmental paper in the above noted preparation. They may purchase paper from a departmental secretary at the cost of $5/ream and be reciepted
