CIHR Operating Grant : Data Analysis Using Existing Databases and Cohorts

Sponsor

The CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR), the CIHR Institute of Populations and Public Health (CIHR-IPPH) and the CIHR Roadmap Accelerator Fund, in partnership with Statistics Canada

Description

The intent of this funding opportunity is to highlight large, well-established cohorts/databases*, such as the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project (CPTP), the Canadian Urban Environmental Health Research Consortium (CANUE) data, and the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), as well as administrative datasets and national surveys to encourage their utilization by the research community.

* Large, well-established cohorts/databases can be defined as those expanding outside their regional boundaries.

Research Areas

This funding opportunity will support research that use large, well-established cohorts/databases through three funding streams:

  1. Cancer Prevention and Control: The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) will fund projects that are relevant to the breadth of cancer prevention and cancer control specific to at least one or more of the following ICR Strategic Priorities. Applications are also encouraged in the areas of patient reported outcomes and Indigenous health:

    • Targeting High Fatality Cancers
    • Health Economics and Health Services Research in Cancer Control
    • Redressing Cancer Risk Factor Disparities and Prevention Service Inequities
  2. Population and Public Health – Healthy Cities: The Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH) will fund projects which are relevant to its Healthy Cities priority area, in particular projects that use existing data to:

    • Evaluate the impact on health and health equity of interventions to the physical, social or policy environment
    • Contribute to the planning of physical, social or policy interventions with the purpose of improving urban population health or well-being
    • Address critical contextual questions related to the implementation of an intervention and scaling up of evidence-based interventions
    • Fill knowledge gaps that are critical for laying the foundation for future population health intervention research in urban areas
    • Develop and validate measures for the evaluation of urban physical, social or policy interventions
    • Use existing microdata to develop and validate new data products and measures for the evaluation of urban physical, social or policy interventions here.
    • Statistics Canada will also be holding a webinar to provide more information (date to be determined)
  3. The Environments and Health Signature Initiative (EHSI): EHSI will fund projects that are relevant to its objectives and make use of CANUE datasets and link to health data.

The objective of these data analysis grants is to advance knowledge in the relevant research areas above through the analysis of existing large cohort, survey and/or administrative datasets.

Eligibility

  • The Nominated Principal Applicant must be an independent researcher appointed at an eligible institution (see Institutional Eligibility Requirements for eligibility process and associated timelines) at the time of application.
  • Only one application per Nominated Principal Applicant can be submitted to this competition.
  • A letter or any other supporting document from the data custodian indicating that the applicant(s) have obtained permission to access the data and, in the case of a data linkage(s), that the researcher(s) has/have obtained permission to create the linkage(s) and use the resulting data.*
  • For any research applications involving First Nations, Inuit, Métis and/or Urban Indigenous populations, the research team must include at least one knowledge user who self-identifies as either First Nations, Inuit, or Métis, or provides evidence of Indigenous-living experience**.

*Applicants should make all efforts to obtain proof of permission to access data by the application deadline. If extenuating circumstances exist, such as an extended access permission process, applicants must submit a document from the data custodian with their application detailing support in principle pending completion of any required access process. If successful, applicants will then be required to provide proof of permission to access the data before funds will be released. Please contact CIHR-Support if you cannot submit this document by the application deadline.

**Indigenous-living experience is a quality primarily demonstrated by individuals who are closely connected with First Nations, Inuit, Métis and/or Urban Indigenous populations. For non-Indigenous individuals, Indigenous-living experience may be acquired through special circumstances, such as close relationships and experience with Indigenous peoples; living an extended period of time (e.g., 5 years or more) in a First Nations, Inuit, or Métis community; or through similar experience with other Indigenous Peoples – e.g., Native American peoples of the US, Pacific Islanders, or South American Indigenous Peoples.
