Free eLearning for CANARIE Higher Education Members - Splunk Certified Power User

The Power User Certification gives participants hands-on training with Splunk®Enterprise. Splunk Enterprise can index data across campus IT infrastructures regardless of format or location, including logs, clickstreams, sensors, stream network traffic, web servers, custom learning applications, hypervisors, social media, and cloud services. Splunk uses machine data—the digital data created by the devices, applications, systems, technologies, sensors and infrastructure powering modern education institutions—to address big data, IT operations, security and analytics use cases.

Machine data is a powerful opportunity for higher education and research institutions. Campus networks, infrastructure, applications, servers, learning management systems and end-user devices generate huge volumes of machine data that—when leveraged—can provide unique insight into problems, usage patterns and trends across an entire campus IT infrastructure.

As a member of CANARIE, the University of Guelph has access to free Splunk eLearning which meets the requirements for Splunk Certified Power User. The courses included are:

• Using Splunk (eLearning)
• Searching and Reporting with Splunk (eLearning)
• Creating Splunk Knowledge Objects (eLearning)
• Splunk Infrastructure Overview (eLearning)

Creating an account

• Goto https://inter.viewcentral.com/reg/splunk/login
• Click on Create your free account today
• Fill in form using your @uoguelph.ca email address
  • Please choose a password that is different than the one for your central login
  • NOTE: this is not currently available to undergraduate students with @mail.uoguelph.ca email addresses.
• Click the Create Your Account button
• Verify your account by clicking the Verify your Email button in the email you receive

Accessing training

• Goto https://inter.viewcentral.com/reg/splunk/login
• Login with the account created
• Click the Search button in the left-hand menu
• Set the Delivery Method drop-down box to E-learning
• Click the Search button
• Add the desired course to the cart (Be sure to select the CANARIE: $0.00 USD option.)  Due to the time-limited nature of the courses, it is recommended that you register and complete courses one at a time.
• Choose checkout and follow the checkout procedure
• Click the launch link found on the receipt or on the My Profile page

Some key points to remember about the training:

• Each user can only register once for any given module of the Splunk Power User training program.
• The program will be available for staff and student use only.
• Each module must be completed within 30 days from the registration date. Modules cannot be extended without a fee being incurred.
• Modules cannot be repeated.
• This program will expire on December 31, 2017. Users who have registered for a module before this date will have 30 days in which to complete the 4 courses.
• All training is provided in English only.
