NSERC: Discovery Grants, RTI and Northern Research Supplements
DISCOVERY GRANTS (Individual, Team and SubAtomic Physics)
The Discovery Grants (DG) Program (Individual, Team and Subatomic Physics [SAP] Project) support ongoing programs of research. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all advances in research, whether made individually or in teams. Researchers are free to work in the mode most appropriate for the research area.
Internal Deadline: October 25
External Deadline: November 1
For Subatomic Physics projects >$500,000/yr.
Internal Deadline: Sept. 24
External Deadline: October 1
For more information see the website here.
RESEARCH TOOLS & INSTRUMENTS (RTI)
RTI Grants are one-year awards that assist buying or developing research equipment that costs more than $7,000. Please note that applicants cannot include equipment that was purchased before the application deadline. Also, applicants can only be the included on one application, either as an applicant or as a co-applicant.
RTI grants are divided into three categories, according to the total net cost of the equipment, i.e., excluding taxes, shipping and handling. These categories are:
- RTI grants – Category 1: $7,001 to $150,000 (available for all disciplines that come under the Evaluation Groups);
- RTI grants – Category 2: $150,001 to $325,000 (Subatomic Physics only); and
- RTI grants – Category 3: more than $325,000 (Subatomic Physics only).
NSERC will accept applications under Category 1 for equipment whose total net cost is up to $250,000, provided that the applicant is able to secure funding from other sources to bring the amount requested from NSERC to $150,000 or less. This funding must be in place and confirmed at the time that the application is submitted. Such sources may include contributions from NSERC Discovery Grants held by the applicant or co-applicants. The use of other types of NSERC grants is permitted, provided that prior written authorization is obtained from NSERC.
Internal Deadline: October 18
External Deadline: October 25

NORTHERN RESEARCH SUPPLEMENTS
The Discovery Grants Northern Research Supplements (NRS) Program has been established to help augment and promote Canadian university-based northern research and training. The main purpose of the Northern Research Supplements program is to recognize the added logistical costs unique to conducting research in the Canadian North.
The NRS Program is aimed at NSERC-funded researchers who intend to conduct research in Canada's North. You must apply for a Northern Research Supplement at the same time you apply for an NSERC Discovery Grant. Applications will be accepted only from researchers who are applying for a Discovery Grant in the same year’s competition.
Internal Deadline: October 25
External Deadline: November 1
For more information see the website here.
"Please submit a signed OR-5 Form and attach a copy of NSERC's Form 101 and Appendix B & C (if applicable) to: research.services@uoguelph.ca by the Internal Deadline.
