Mission Statement
To improve the planning and management of natural resources for different agroecosystems in Ontario such that environmental Quality and a competitive agriculture and food system are sustained.
Executive Summary
The total annual budget for the Environment and Natural Resources Program from the University of Guelph is $1,827,318. The total annual OMAFRA research budget is $416,613. Program management for the Environment and Natural Resources Program is unique.. A majority (75%) of the program resources from the University of Guelph are allocated to a prioritized list of issues. A longer term set of Objectives and Goals form the framework for researchers to address these issues. A new executive committee for the program represents the University of Guelph and OMAFRA. At the University of Guelph researchers respond to Project Proposals from the program and then resources are allocated on a competitive basis. This structured approach allows advisory groups to focus on issues and define desired outcomes.
The Research Program has three objectives:
1. Soil Quality and Land Conservation,
2. Water Quality and Conservation, and
3. Climate and Air Quality.
Each Objective has 4 goals, one each related to processes, spatial-temporal scaling, management, and socio-economic evaluation.
The major issues addressed are manure management, nitrogen use efficiency of fertilizers and legumes, rural-urban water conflict, site specific crop management, land waste application and treatment, wetland and riparian zone management, and implementation of environmental farm plans.
