Professor Brown specializes in the study of microclimatic design and human thermal comfort modeling.  He and his students engage in basic and applied research in a wide range of landscapes around the world - from the very hot to the very cold.

Bob is co-author of the book entitled "Microclimatic Landscape Design: Creating Thermal Comfort and Energy Efficiency", published by John Wiley & Sons, which continues to be the international standard on the topic.  He also wrote the book "Landscape Assessment for Planning and Design" and co-edited the book "Satoyama: The Traditional Rural Landscape of Japan" published by Springer.

He teaches a range of courses in the landscape architecture programs, including his regular courses of Landscape Resource Analysis, Critical Inquiry and Research Analysis and Landscape Analysis.  He was recognized for his teaching through receipt of the "2006 Distinguished Teaching Award" from the OAC Alumni Association, and in 2007 received the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects "Teaching Medal".

Bob is active in professional and academic organizations, including being on the Advisory Board for three international journals: "Landscape Research" and "Landscape and Urban Planning", and "Urban Forestry & Urban Greening".  In 2007 he was elected to the College of Fellows of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture.
