Jim Mahone officially joined Capacity Development and Extension in 2001 after years of professional involvement with the department in his previous roles as Director for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF), and as Special Assistant to the Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC). As faculty member he teaches two RES graduate courses: Leadership, Gender, Power and Advocacy and Facilitation Skills.

His research interests are focused on leadership development, gender and leadership and capacity building in rural communities. In this line of work, Jim is participating in the development of a national rural network that will join major provincial and territorial rural organizations across Canada. This project is funded by the Rural Secretariat of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and it has been promoted, among others, by the Coastal Communities Network (Nova Scotia), the British Columbia Coastal Communities Network, the Ontario Rural Council, Solidarite Rurale du Quebec, the Saskatchewan Council for Community Development and the University of Guelph. The final objective of this initiative is the creation of a rural advocacy body at a national level aimed at addressing the concerns of rural populations nationwide. As part of his commitment to this initiative, Mahone acted as facilitator for a one-day session in the Second National Rural Conference that took place in Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island) last April. He is also conducting research on transformational leadership with the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program.
