The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) One of the key contributors to making urban and rural life workable, livable and prosperous is the professional planner. A planner works with communities to provide research, reasoned analysis and recommendations on urban, regional, environmental and social issues. Experts in public participation processes and conflict resolution, planners help develop solutions that are practical and effective.


The Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) Represents Ontario's professional planning community, and is the only organization that brings all Ontario planners together. OPPI's objects include: 1. promoting, maintaining and regulating high standards of practice and ethics; 2.furthering recognition of the profession; 3. promoting the value, use, and methods of planning; 4. improving the quality of Ontario environments and communities by the application planning principles.

The Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) A network of universities and university departments that teach and conduct research within the field of urban and regional planning. The network exists to promote the development of the teaching curricula and research within the Member Schools through regular dialogue, exchange visits and the dissemination of research and best practice.


Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) is a consortium of university-based programs offering credentials in urban and regional planning. Acting together, the ACSP member school faculty are able to express their shared commitments to understanding the dynamics of urban and regional development, enhancing planning practices, and improving the education of both novice and experienced planners.

A comprehensive list of all acredited planning program in Canada is retained by the Canadian Institute of Planners (list is indexed as "Universities"). A similar list is maintained by the American Planning Association for U.S. planning schools. A few especially useful resources are:

Ryerson's online magazine for planning students. This site features a range of employment and professional development activities and is frequently up-dated.

Ontario Agricultural Training Institute: OATI's Mission: To strengthen rural communities by providing superior, specialized, accessible training and development opportunities. They have an excellent site full of current, useful material.

Agriculture

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) Ministry with an obvious interest in advancing the welfare of rural Ontarians. http://www.gov.on.ca/OMAFRA/

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) is made up of 51 county and district federations representing local farmers in all areas of the province. This site provides current listings of OFA events as well as policy positions it is advancing to the Government of Ontario.

Food and Agriculture Organization (UN Agency) Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) is http://www.iicacan.org It contains information on animal health, bioscience and biotech, economics and statistics, food safety, maps, marketing, research and the consultant application form.

Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) One of Canada's premier centre for the study of all things rural. OAC's site features a section on current research as well as connections to the departments within the college.

International Development

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) An important contributor to research and projects in developing countries, CIDA's site is a useful repositiry of country profiles, project summaries, occasional publications and funding proposal forms.

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) A group of agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities in specific regions of the developing world, particularly Asia and Africa. The mandates of these agencies range from the fields of health and education to culture, rural development and the promotion of private sector enterprise. Includes the Aga Khan Foundation.

The Grameen Bank Provides credit to the poorest of the poor in rural Bangladesh without any collateral. At Grameen Bank, credit is a cost effective weapon to fight poverty and it serves as a catalyst in the over all development of socio-economic well-being. This site is packed with information which will be especially useful to people interested in micro-credit.

Environment and Sustainability

The World Wildlife Fund Is the world's largest and most experienced independent conservation organization with 4.7 million supporters and a global network active in some 100 countries. WWF's mission is to protect nature and the biological diversity that we all need to survive. This site provides a choice of country-specific WWF sites.

The Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI) conducts policy-relevant research and facilitates public dialogue to assist policymakers in understanding the rural impacts of public policies and programs.

Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation Many excellent on-line or hard-copy publications are listed here and can be ordered free or for a low fee. CMHC employees are very accessible (email or phone) This site also includes information about their $20,000 research grants.

Go to the Hunger Site at the UN. All you do is click a button and somewhere in the world some hungry person gets a meal to eat, at no cost to you. Gender

The Institute's for Research on Women and Gender's mission is to encourage interdisciplinary research on women and gender and to make findings accessible to a broad public in local, national, and international communities. the centre is located at Stanford University, California.

Directory of Internet Resources on the Intersection of Women, Gender and Feminism with Urban Planning compiled by Stacy Harwood and featuring many resources (Discussion groups, on-line journals, etc)

Directory of Gender Related Internet Resources for Academic Research. This directory was compiled by Helen Fallon as part of a thesis for the Masters Degree in Women's Studies at University College Dublin, Ireland. It aims to link to sources of relevance for those doing gender related academic research. It covers resources which are free of charge to access. While Irish organizations are featured prominently, there are many others represented here.

Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is one of Canada's foremost advocacy organizations for aboriginal peoples in Canada.

Trent University's Department of Native Studies Also includes a link to the Aboriginal Education Council.

Rethinking Tourism Project's new publication, "Globalization, Tourism and Indigneous Peoples: What You Should Know About the World's Largest Industry" was published in November and hundreds of copies were distributed in Seattle at the WTO meetings. Planning and environmental law

In 1970, a group of young concerned law students and community activists formed the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) in response to the overwhelming need to give voice to the environment in policy and laws. This web-site features many excellent postion papers, back-grounders and links. A must for anybody involved in environemental policy development, analysis, or research.

The Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition has started a Community Economic Development Project - Healthy Economy, Healthy Communities.


Centre for Rural Economy is a social science research centre in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Food Marketing at the University of Newcastle (grade 5 in the last RAE). Broadly, it is interested in research that supports the development of a sustainable rural economy - its main research areas are agri-environment issues and rural development.

You can now visit the first completed sector of the site, which focuses on the actions individuals and families can take in their homes, transportation and lifestyle choices to protect the climate.


Canadian Environmental Law Association Fantastic, non-partisan, organization involved in a renge of legal struggles. Much of CELA's work is Ontario-focused but increasingly they are involved in cases accross Canada. Many useful links, publications and "back-ground" material here. Well-maintained site full of interesting items!


Community Vulnerability Asssessment Tool (New Hanover County, North Carolina) NOAA Are you interested in or responsible for reducing the impacts of hazards in your community?A good site for those interested in all-hazard mitigation planning.

Tourism and Recreation back to Rural Themes

Ontario tourism links. This site is a starting point for tourist queries as well as research interests. It includes a number of governemnt sites as well as some affiliated agencies. The Rethinking Tourism Project's Special Report on International Tourism Policy and Indigenous Peoples
(July 27, 1999) is now online. Very interesting comments about the recent NAFTA (CEC) meeting on ecotourism and also what the UN is and is not doing.


The Ecotourism Society is one of the world-leaders in developing ecologically and socially responsible tourism. Excellent online resources (publications, links, job-postings). Some sections do require membership.


Earth Travelers: travel journals from people who have taken journeys of ecological interest. (The section is quite modest at the moment, however, we hope it will grow in the near future.)

Centre for Tourism, University of Otago The Centre also publishes a journal called Current Issues in Tourism.
