Undergraduate Student Opportunities
APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR THE SUDBURY FIELD CAMP ** Deadline: July 5, 2013 **
Mon, 06/17/2013 - 08:50 — jscarrowThe Short Course and Field School at the Sudbury Impact Structure is a week-long classroom and field training program based in Sudbury, Ontario. The goal of the program will be to introduce students to impact cratering processes and observe, in the field, the attributes of an immense basin-size impact structure. Sudbury is known for spectacular shatter cones, tremendously thick melt-bearing impact breccias (the Onaping Formation), and a differentiated impact melt sheet (the Sudbury Igneous Complex). Skills developed during the program should better prepare students for their own thesis studies in impact cratered terrains, whether they be on Earth, the Moon, Mars, or some other solar system planetary surface. This field camp is being organized under the auspices of the NASA Lunar Science Institute, which is designed, in part, to train a new generation of explorers for the Moon and beyond. The activity is being led the Canadian Lunar Research Network and the LPI-JSC Center for Lunar Science and Exploration.
Course details are available in our syllabus. Please pass this information on to any students who might be interested. APPLICATION DEADLINE: July 5, 2013
Applications are only accepted using the online application form found at the LPI’s
Sudbury Field Camp website: www.lpi.usra.edu/nlsi/sudbury/
The HQP Graduate Scholarship program
Mon, 06/03/2013 - 16:21 — jscarrowThe HQP Graduate Scholarship program has been renewed for another 5-year period. Details of the newly revised HQP Graduate Scholarship program can be found at:
http://www.uoguelph.ca/omafra_partnership/hqp/en/index.asp
Applications will be accepted through the web-based system between June 17th and June 28th 2013 .
With reduced funds available for scholarships over the next 5 years, as detailed in the website, there are two fundamental changes to the program.
1. The Scholarships will only be available to MSc thesis/research and PhD students across campus.
2. There will only be one call for applications each year. The date for subsequent years is yet to be decided, but will likely be in April or May. However, students can start their graduate programs in any semester of the following academic year.
For this current round of applications, students need to indicate a start date of either Fall 2013, Winter 2014 or Summer 2014.

New program in Iceland, the "greenest" country in the World
Tue, 04/30/2013 - 11:15 — jscarrowThis summer GREEN is launching a new program in Iceland, the "greenest" country in the World. This program is offered in partnership with Reykjavik University, which provides transferrable academic credit upon completion of the 10-day program.
Applications are invited for a Masters Student position in SES
Mon, 04/22/2013 - 11:00 — jscarrowMaster of Science Student – University of Guelph
Applicants with an interest in renewable energy are invited for a Masters Student position in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph, with the hands-on research component at the Kemptville Campus, in Kemptville, Ontario. This offers an exciting opportunity to study in an emerging field at one of Canada’s leading research universities.
The Project
Current concerns over the impact of greenhouse gas production from fossil fuels and increasing energy costs are driving the interest in renewable energy sources. Direct combustion of biomass (grasses, wood) has opportunities from home, greenhouse, and agricultural building heating, to replacing coal in large industrial scale energy consumers and electricity producers. However, during the combustion process, high concentrations of inorganic elements in the biomass reduce the combustion efficiency.
However, some of these compounds are water soluble and are leached from the harvested crops when exposed to natural precipitation. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of leaching soluble compounds from biomass crops prior to combustion. This will be performed under laboratory controlled conditions. Biomass samples will be harvested, pretreated (chopping, grinding), and subjected to leaching tests by soaking the biomass with a water based solution with varying parameters (temperature, pH, time). The chemical composition of the treated biomass will be analyzed. The results will be used to develop biomass processing systems to remove soluble components from the raw biomass and to estimate the potential for fouling and slagging in subsequent combustion processes. Under the guidance of the faculty advisor, the student will develop the experimental plan, perform the trials, analyze the data, and develop a model to predicted nutrient leaching.
