PAST EVENTS: "The Match that Was..." by Peiter Groenevelt
On a spanking new soccer pitch, covered with deadly
ASTRO turf, under a brightly shining sun, two brave teams and two
experienced referees faced a spherical "football" (or futbol as they
call it in Brazil). The two excellent goalies kept the score blank until
Claudia Wagner-Riddle surprised the young upstart Grad goalie, Mike
McGill, to make it 1-0. A fair and spirited, accident-free, first half
ended with that score. Interested in keeping a proper balance between
the different groups in the School, and in view of the fact that the
Grad team won both the 2009 and the 2010 contests, your reporter was
keen to secure a win for the Faculty/Staff team. So, early in the second
half, he shoved the ball in the corner of the Grad net to make it 2-0. A
victory seemed afoot until a blistering shot off the foot of Shannon
Brown slipped under the outstretched body of the elegantly diving goalie
Jonathan Newman: 2-1. That set the Grad team on fire. Ferocious attacks
on JN followed. But, he stood his ground and when the final whistle came
the score was still 2-1. By now you will have noticed that women are the
up and coming force in soccer. For the first time in the 43 year history
of the Bill Mitchell Memorial Cup, more than 50% of the goals were
scored by women. "Mothers and fathers all over the land....the times are
a changing". Please note that Bill Mitchell at 82 is as fit as ever. We
would like to thank the two referees Terry Gillespie and Elke Eichelmann
for a 100% professional supervision of the match. Please go to the
coffee room on the third floor and have a look at the two group photo's.
Some person in SES, younger than me, may see an opportunity to make some
money for the United Way by selling copies of these photo's for $5,
which is the price for a pint of beer in the Grad Lounge. Finally, all
Faculty ans Staff can now rest in peace, stop exercising, eat as much as
you wish, and concentrate on your research, because there is no shame in
loosing the 2011 contest.
