Student Activities and Clubs
Student Activities and Clubs
Art History students are active participants in diverse aspects of campus life. They serve as elected representatives on School of Fine Art and Music academic program committees, College of Arts committees, the Central Student Association and the Graduate Students' Association.
As members of the arts community, they contribute art criticism to the student newspaper The Ontarian. In addition, students also serve as docents and interns at the MacDonald Stewart Art Centre to gain valuable experience. Within the Art History and Studio Arts programs, the Fine Art Network (FAN) is a significant contributor to the social and artistic life of the campus community. In fact, last year FAN was presented with a campus award recognizing its contribution to student life. FAN organizes the annual Student Art Show, and trips to such art centres as New York, Chicago and Boston as well as social events and guest speakers. In addition, the Music Students' Association (MSA) represents and provides services for students enrolled in music programs at University Guelph as well as students taking music courses.
Overseas Study
Art History students also take part in overseas study opportunities, including the College of Arts' London Semester, the Krakow Semester, and the Paris Semester. These programs provide students with first-hand experience in the major cultural centres of the world. There is no substitute for direct encounters with actual works of art and living culture.
Other Options of the B.A. Program
Students often pursue combined Majors in other B.A. programs such as English, History, Philosophy, Music and Drama. Individuals who hope to pursue careers in art history or curatorial work include significant language study.
