Gryphon hockey salutes OVC Challenge Cup

Sixty years after graduation, Tony Calverley, DVM ’52, participated in the ceremonial puck drop at a Gryphon men’s hockey game held Jan. 20. The event paid tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Ontario Veterinary College and the 82nd-year of the DVM student hockey tournament. Calverley’s student team won the tournament every year from 1949 to 1952.
Hockey was part of OVC student life long before the college moved to Guelph in 1922, but an organized inter-year tournament was inaugurated in 1931; it became known as the Challenge Cup in the 1970s. This year’s tournament featured a new silver trophy made by Prof. Brad Hanna, DVM ’89.
