Graduate and Postdoctoral Positions Available

As a team of collaborating academic and government scientists, we are seeking 6 Ph. D. students and a post-doctoral research associate to work as a part of a multidisciplinary team conducting manipulative experiments designed to examine the effects of multiple stressors in small wetland ecosystems. The focus of this NSERC funded research program will be on the potential effects of the herbicide glyphosate on amphibians and other aquatic organisms when this chemical stressor co-occurs with eutrophication or predation stress in agricultural or forest wetlands. We envision these experiments as being the first in a series of studies to be conducted at the "Long-term Experimental Wetlands Area (LEWA)," on Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in New Brunswick Canada.

Company
Great Lakes Field Crew of the MOE
Position
from Carolyn Brown, Semester 8 (F'07):
Last summer and fall I did a co-op with the Great Lakes Field Crew of the MOE.  This involved being on a boat for most of the time taking water samples.  They need a current student or very recent graduate for a FULL-TIME position ASAP.

I think the position is until Christmas, but there are networking opportunities for other jobs.  You probably shouldn't apply if you get sea sick easily.  Last year I would drive Monday morning from Orillia to Etobicoke, but I usually wouldn't return home until Friday afternoon.  There is lots of over time so you could make a lot (I made above the poverty line last year).

This year they are focusing on Lake Erie, so 2-3 weeks would be spent taking samples and retrieving sediment traps along the whole northshore of it.  Other projects might include cyanobacteria sampling in Sturgeon Bay (N. Parry Sound), fishing for young of the year along L. Erie, monitoring in L. Huron near Kincarden, mussel biomonitoring in Niagara River, or Wheatly Harbour PCB contamination monitoring.  This job involves a lot of heavy lifting, being outside (on water until beginning of Dec), equipment organization/cleaning, some phytoplankton processing, possibly use of fluorometers.

Company
RIM
WebSite
Location
Ottawa, Mississauga, and Waterloo, ON
Position
RIM is continuously posting jobs in various areas of the company including:  Software Development, Software Design, Hardware Engineering, Customer Support, and Marketing and Sales in all three of their Canadian locations (Ottawa, Mississauga, and Waterloo).

RESUME TIPS:

Please note the importance of reading the job description for the position the student is applying to.  We had a Mechanical Engineer apply for an HR position!!  If the student is not qualified for the position at all (in terms of program of study), they should not be applying.  If the student has the majority of the skills required, but not all, then it never hurts to apply, but please limit the number of applications to a maximum of 10 postings at any given time.

SPELL CHECK is an extremely important tool in a resume.  But this is not enough.  A manual re-read must be made before submitting it to the employer.  Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors indicate that the student did not take the time to produce a solid resume.  As well, if the term Excellent written and oral communications? is listed on their resume and there are quite a few spelling and grammar mistakes, the resume will get a pass.

Only one resume may be submitted for all of the positions that students apply to at RIM.  This means that students should not be tailoring their resume to just one position if they are applying to multiple positions.  As well, cover letters are not necessary, as we do not ask for them.  A generic objective at the top of the resume will suffice, but students are cautioned not to indicate a particular position in the objective.  If this is the case, most times, we will only be able to send the resume to the one position they have identified, essentially screening themselves out of the rest of the jobs.
