Mobile Learning

Mobile learning (sometimes referred to as "m-learning") is related to e-learning and distance education, with a distinct focus on learning across contexts with the aid of mobile devices.

"Any sort of learning that happens when the learner is not at a fixed, predetermined location, or learning that happens when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies."

Values of mobile learning: 
  • brings new technology into the classroom.
  • light-weight device compared to books, PCs, etc.
  • can be utilized for blended/hybrid learning.
  • can be a useful add-on tool for students with special needs.
  • increases student engagement and inclusion.
  • enhances existing lessons.
  • personalizes learning.
  • creates a platform for synchronous and asynchronous learning.

Challenges of mobile learning:
  • connectivity and bandwidth.
  • battery life.
  • screen size and key size.
  • multiple standards, screen sizes, operating systems.
  • accessibilty and cost barriers as well as frequent changes in technology.
  • supporting learning across many contexts.
  • privacy issues.
  • copyright considerations.
  • conceptual differences in face-to-face, e-learning and m-learning.
