Inc., Arlington Heights, Illinois (USA). This bi-annual conference
is attended by practitioners, researchers and consultants who
work with the 4MAT� curriculum design model. Jaellayna introduced
Universal Instructional Design during a plenary session.
University of
Ottawa
September 2002, at an event attended by representatives
from University of Ottawa,
Carleton University, Trent University, University of Alberta,
Coll�ge Universitaire de Saint-Boniface, and University of Winnipeg
(plus the pleasure of a delegation from Representatives from Ministry
of Education: People's Republic of China), this full-day seminar/workshop
explored "Universal Instructional Design: Promoting Inclusiveness
in Student Learning" (morning session by Aldo Caputo and Jaellayna
Palmer) and "The Accessible Web & Related Technologies" (afternoon
session by Gavin Park).

Over a 3 month period we were fortunate to have
been part of three events co-sponsored by Waterloo's LT3
Centre, Office for Persons with Disabilities and TRACE Centre.
(1) A booth in the Adaptive Technology Fair, November 2002, (2)
Jaellayna's "UID 101" for faculty and staff, December 2002, and
(3) a full-day workshop on "Universal Instructional Design:
Promoting Inclusiveness in Student Learning" (Jaellayna)
and "The Accessible Web & Related Technologies"
(Gavin Park), January 2003.
Inter-University
Disabilities Issues Association (IDIA)
February 2003, Jaellayna led a full-day workshop
with members
from 17 Universities across Ontario with a focus on tools to further
UID principles within their schools and offices.

"Universal Instructional Design: Incremental Changes with
High Impact" (with the assistance of Linda Yuval, Research
Assistant) and (2) "Strategies for Applying UID To A Course:
Two Designers Using Two Different Approaches" (with Aldo
Caputo of Guelph and Adrienne DeSchutter of Guelph-Humber).

Conference featured not only plenary presentations but also
break-outs and workshops. Jaellayna facilitated an exploration
of " Learning Styles and Universal Instructional Design (UID)
- Complementary Approaches?".

Oshawa, ON. A staff develoment
day called "Your Turn to Learn" included a hands-on workshop
on "Universal Instructional Design and YOUR STUDENTS" presented
by Jaellayna.

College (Montreal, QC)
May 2003,
Montreal, Quebec. An annual event at JAC
is a full-day conference on "Learning Disabilities and Academic
Success". Jaellayna was invited this year to introduce UID as
an approach for faculty, staff and administrators to consider
in working with their Learning Disabled (and in fact all) students.
York University
May 2003,
Toronto, ON. Jaellayna was invited to introduce UID, showcase
examples from our project and elsewhere, and suggest some implementation
steps to a representative group of administrators and faculty
from many sectors of this University.

of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. Jaellayna presented a
workshop offering "A Low-Budget, High-Impact Approach to Universal
Instructional Design".
Wolfville, Nova
Scotia
June 2003,
Acadia University. This 2-day symposium, convened by Rehabilitation
Programs and Services Department of Education, was attended
by senior administrators, staff and faculty from Acadia, Mount
St. Vincent, Saint Francis Xavier and University Ste. Anne Education
Departments. Over the 2-day period Jaellayna introduced UID, showcased
examples from our own work and elsewhere, presented (with the
assistance of Linda Yuval) preliminary data on our research findings,
and conducted hands-on activities to move from theory to practice.
International
Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE)
2003
August 2003, Palm
Springs, California. Joining Jeff Stewart (one of our keenest
UID project participants) at this major
event for the hospitality and tourism industry, Jaellayna
facilitated a workshop on "Inclusive Teaching Strategies in the
Classroom".
University of Toronto
October,
2003, Toronto, ON. As part of this University's efforts
to increase
awareness about UID, Jaellayna was invited to introduce UID,
showcase examples from our project and elsewhere, and suggest
applications using learning technologies to a group of faculty
and others from many sectors of the University.
University
of Waterloo
October
2003, Waterloo, ON. In addition to offering an exhibit at their
second annual Adaptive
Technology Fair, Jaellayna gave a presentation about UID to
faculty, staff and visitors from the community-at-large.
McMaster University
November
2003, Hamilton, ON. This was an exceptionally well-attended event,
with participants from many academic departments and roles within
McMaster as well as neighbouring Mohawk College. Jaellayna introduced
UID as a set of principles and offered real-life examples. Group
activities focused on appreciating the diversity of learner capabilities
and needs and also individual, concrete action steps.
