B.Sc. Counselling Site

A variety of information relevant to the Marine and Freshwater Biology, Wildlife and Zoology majors is available at the B.Sc. Counselling Site since these are majors within the B.Sc. program. The B.Sc. Counselling Site is a great place to look for information about degree options, majors, minors, course selection, etc. Although the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page is intended for prospective students you may find answers to some of your questions there.

You  are welcome to drop in and visit us and we will help you at any time if we are free.  Or you can call ahead or email one of us and make an appointment.

Faculty advisors should not be confused with your program counsellor Dr. Dawn Larson.  A "Faculty Advisor" according to the Undergraduate Calendar "provides students who have selected the subject of their specialization with advice or assistance in course selection".  A Program Counsellor" according to the Undergraduate Calendar "assists students in the development of educational plans which are realistic and compatible with their life goals by helping to identify and assess alternatives and consequences of decisions, and providing interpretation of regulations applying to the specific degree program."   Despite the more flowery description of a Program Counsellor the real difference is that your program counsellor in the College of Biological Science has the authority to grant exemptions from rules and regulations for medical, psychological and compassionate reasons.  Faculty advisors can just commiserate with you - and tell you to go and see Dr. Larson.

Web Advisor

It is now possible to add and drop courses using a web based online connection called Web Advisor. It is also possible to search for courses using specific search criteria (subject area, level, etc.) and Web Advisor will let you know what is available. A record of the courses you have taken and grades awarded is also available.

Elective courses

Unless you have approval for other courses from your Program Counsellor your electives must come from one of the following lists.
Approved Science Elective Courses for B.Sc. Students and Acceptable Arts and Social Science Elective Courses for B.Sc. Students
Suggested Electives Lists for Marine and Freshwater Biology, Wildlife Biology, and Zoology

If you can't decide what electives you would like to take you should consult the Suggested Electives Lists for Marine and Freshwater Biology, Wildlife Biology, and Zoology.   These are suggestions provided by faculty members in the Department of Zoology.  You don't have to take any of these courses (unless the Undergraduate Calendar lists them as core in your program), but the list may help you to select appropriate electives.  In selecting electives follow your own interests and goals wherever they lead you.
