Oogenesis: Mammalian Ovary
The Microscopic Anatomy of the Mature Secondary Follicle

Here you will see several sections of mammalian ovary, featuring a mature secondary (Graafian) follicle.

The mature follicle This shows the entire mature secondary follicle (arrows) and surrounding ovarian tissue.

This shows the oocyte with the surrounding cells of the cumulus oophorus as they project into the antrum.

The box is enlarged at the left
This shows the oocyte (Oo) surrounded by the zona pellucida (Z), and cumulus oophorus (Co), projecting into the antrum (A). On the wall of the inner follicle, surrounding the antrum (A), there is a layer called the membrana granulosa (1) and an outer layer called the theca (2).

Up close and personal with the cumulus oophorus The box is enlarged at the left
This shows the cumulus oophorus (CO), zona pellucida (Z) and oocyte (Oo) within. Note the nucleus and prominent nucleolus within the oocyte (Oo).
