Oogenesis: Mammalian Ovary
Follicular Maturation

Here you will see several histological sections of follicles as they mature through time. Schroll down the page to follow the follicles during their maturation from primary follicles to secondary follicles and, finally, to the corpus luteum. You can either skip straight to the first section - the primary follicle or view the diagram of the schematic ovary .

A Schematic Drawing of the Ovary

The blue arrow follows the the ovarian follicles from their maturation (from primary follicles) to their eventual demise (as the corpus luteum). Note: The follicles do NOT actually move around the ovary as they mature. The schematic is merely drawn this way to show all the stages of maturation at once. When you're ready for the real thing, go to the first section - the primary follicle.

The schematic ovary

The Primary Follicle

Primary follicles The box is the area seen at the leftThis section of the ovary shows the relative size (box) of the enlarged area to the left as compared with the mature (Graafian) follicle seen in the center of the section. On the left, two primary follicles are seen. The oocytes (Oo) are surrounded by a single layer of follicular cells at this stage (arrows).

The Secondary Follicle

Early secondary follicle

Before moving on, go to anatomy of the mature secondary follicle.

The box is the area seen at the leftThis section of the ovary shows the relative size (box) of the enlarged area to the left as compared with the mature (Graafian) follicle (arrows) seen in the center of the section. Note the difference in the size of the antrum (A) between the early secondary follicle (enlarged at the left) and the mature secondary (Graafian) follicle (arrows) as seen above. You should have a closer look at the anatomy of the mature secondary follicle.

The Corpus Luteum

The corpus luteum The box is the area seen at the leftThe above section of the ovary shows the relative size (box) of the enlarged area to the left as compared with the mature (Graafian) follicle (arrows) seen in the center of the section. The corpus luteum is the enlarged remnant of the secondary (Graafian) follicle following ovulation (the release of the oocyte). Note the vacuolization (white circles) associated with the production of lipid soluable steroid hormones (progesterone and estrogens).
