Dietary Lipids/Fatty Acids (Omega-3, others), Nutraceuticals, Functional Foods and the Management of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and associated Risk Factors

Our research is focused upon human-based research trials wherein various dietary fatty acid components (omega-3 fatty acids from fish/fish oils, etc.) plus selected nutraceuticals/functional foods are evaluated with respect to their potential to favourably influence a whole range of risk factors for CVD. The risk factors of interest are those which are currently measured in the public health-care system (e.g. LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, etc.) as well as those with are not available currently in the health care system. The latter include various thrombogenic, atherogenic, inflammatory, and other risk factors. The potential impact of modifying dietary constituents ranging from lipid/fatty acids through to nutraceuticals and functional foods on these conventional and non-conventional risk factors are under current investigation.
Our research group has also developed particular interest in sectors within the population including males and females of varying ages, ethnic backgrounds, stages of life (e.g. post-menopausal women on or not on hormone-replacement therapy, etc.) since there is evidence now that genetic and other factors can influence the responsiveness of individuals to given nutritional interventions. In addition, we are also extensively involved in collaborative epidemiological work with groups within North America (including medical centres and health agencies in Canada and the US) as well as international groups (in Greenland, elsewhere). The listed recent publications represents a sampling of published studies from our laboratory which encompass some of the aforementioned research activities.
