This table lists the nomenclaturally available and taxonomically valid ciliate genera with the correct type species and gender of the genus. In addition, there is a designation of the main habitat(s) of species assigned to the genus with the following abbreviations: aqu. - aquatic; symb. - symbiotic; terr. - terrestrial. In the cases of joint designation, for example, aqu.-terr., some species may have been found only in aquatic habitats, others may have been found only in terrestrial habitats, and others species may have been found in both habitats.
