Dr Wolfgang Baier (1924-2006), Fellow of the Canadian Society of Agrometeorology (CSAM) since 1993, had a tremendous impact on Agricultural Meteorology in Canada and abroad during the last four decades. He joined the agrometeorological section at the Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AAFC) in Ottawa in 1964. He was head of the section from 1969 to 1979.He had an outstanding career as a research scientist in AAFC. He developed a model for estimating evaporation from the black porous-disc atmometer using daily weather data. He wrote numerous publications on crop weather modelling. He is probably best known for his work with George Robertson on the Versatile Soil Moisture Budget which is still widely used. During that period, he won the Patterson Medal for his outstanding contribution to Meteorology in Canada. From 1979 to 1990, he held a wide range of managerial positions in AAFC. At the same time, he made an outstanding contribution to the Commission of Agricultural Meteorology (CAgM) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as his president from 1971 to 1979 and as member of working groups and as rapporteur. In 1999, he received the WMO award for Outstanding and Exceptional Long-term Service to CAgM for his untiring efforts in the preparation of the second edition of the guide to Agricultural Meteorological Practices and subsequent supplements, his services to WMO through technical missions to Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and as author of technical reports and other WMO publications, his wise guidance as director of WMO Symposia and workshops and his involvement on behalf of WHO/CAgM with other UN agencies.
