Xenakis: His Life In Music
by James Harley
Welcome to the website of Xenakis: His Life In Music. This book, published by Routledge Press in 2004, has been authored by James Harley. It represents approximately a decade of work studying the music of Iannis Xenakis, one of the most original and important contemporary composers.
Reviews/articles:
- San Francisco Chronicle
- Minnesota State University Moorhead Advocate
- The Score (Christopher DeLaurenti)
This site is designed to enhance the book by providing extra figures as well as score and audio examples. Score examples originally intended for the print publication have been added here, along with audio excerpts. For those who do not easily have access to the full scores, these examples will hopefully help illustrate the descriptive or analytical discussion in the book.
Links to each figure are listed in order and each one provides a page number which corresponds to the section in the book which discusses that particular figure. Some figures have a corresponding audio clip (they are marked with [audio] tags), and require the Macromedia Flash plugin to play. When viewing some figures (especially score examples), clicking the image should bring up a larger and clearer view.
