The primary role of my research program is to evaluate and develop management methods aimed at reducing inputs into turfgrass systems. Specifically, I am interested in evaluating different low maintenance turfgrass species and cultivars and developing integrated pest management systems with the ultimate goal of achieving a high quality end product while combating pests including diseases, insects and weeds. I am also interested in studying plant-parasitic nematodes on golf course turf and on other affected crops throughout Ontario

Interests: The rapid pace and far-reaching potential of ecological change in the face of globalization and climate change is creating stress within ecosystems all over the world. There is an ever-increasing threat of extinctions of species, communities, and ecosystems along with the biodiversity services and functions that they support. Understanding the complex effects of ecological change at many scales (local to global, recent to historical) on biodiversity is thus of critical importance for predicting human-mediated changes to the environment, conserving biodiversity heritage and sustaining global economies. The CRC in Global Ecological Change recognizes the increasing international stature of ecological problems and their solutions. The research program will highlight similarities and differences between ecological events and practices on different continents with a view to fostering knowledge exchange. It will also provide tools for the application of emerging interdisciplinary theories, improved quantitative methods and predictive simulation models to the preservation, recovery and restoration of perturbed and vulnerable forest ecosystems worldwide.

Much of the world's wild life occurs in areas under intense agriculture, forestry, or other forms of human use, and most of the pressing problems of management relate to reconciling conflicting uses and priorities for wild life habitat. My principal interest is the application of science to such situations and the revision of policies. My students and I are currently researching the problem of lead toxicity to wild life, specifically as it affects waterfowl and loons. We are investigating non-toxic substitutes and how provincial and federal policy and legislation on this topic needs to be revised to achieve a common North American reform. My other area of research involves the application of ecological principles to agriculture so that extensification of land uses may retain habitat features conducive to wild life diversity as well as produce commodities profitably.

However, the principal focus of waterfowl ecology continues to be comparative and experimental studies of ecology and morphology of duck assemblages in prairie and boreal wetlands, with a long-term view to understanding population fluctuations. Recent work emphasizes food web manipulations in marine intertidal areas and prairie potholes, and the effect of climate and landuse change on distribution, abundance and reproductive success of prairie-nesting ducks. We studied factors affecting the distribution and diversity of birds and mammals in real and functional ecological islands, and analyzed how landscape configuration influences the diversity of vertebrates in and around nature reserves to design protected area networks for the efficient conservation of biodiversity. For this work, we link large scale, long term data about land use and species' distribution and abundance. A reintroduction of an extirpated species afforded a Ômanagement experiment' for effects of genetics on population viability. Finally, we advocate and analyze the treatment of resource management policies as hypotheses that can and should be revised in light of management experience, with special reference to Great Lakes fisheries.

Migration represents one of the most complex and fascinating behaviours in nature. Found in a wide variety of taxa including insects, fish, reptiles, mammals, and birds, migration can span thousands of kilometers and occur over multiple life-history stages and habitats. Identifying the factors that influence individual success and population abundance requires knowledge of how events are linked throughout the migratory cycle. The primary obstacle, thus far, has been the inability to track individuals over large geographic distances, resulting in research that has been limited to isolated stages of the migratory cycle. This has made it challenging to determine how populations are spatially connected between periods and, more importantly, for understanding how events in one season carry-over to influence success in subsequent seasons. Novel technologies, such as stable isotopes, trace elements and radio-telemetry, are beginning to bridge these gaps by providing the ability to integrate life-history and demographic information throughout the migratory cycle. The long term goals of my research are: (1) understand how events within and between seasons interact with behaviour and habitat quality to influence population abundance and life-histories, and (2) parameterize and develop a set of predictive models that can be used to test aspects of life-history evolution and population dynamics in migratory animals, and (3) develop and refine sets of accurate and non-invasive methods to track individuals over large geographic distances

An applied component funded by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission has been using a large-scale, top-down approach to examine changes in the biodiversity of stream fishes caused by the presence of sea lamprey barriers, the role of restrictions on fish movement in bringing about these changes, and methods of minimizing any change (e.g. improved fish passage). A purely discovery-based research component has been using a small-scale, bottom-up approach focused on diversification in the foraging movements of brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis). It is examining whether the adaptive behaviour of individuals can facilitate population divergence in physiology, morphology, and life history and, possibly, lead to the formation of new biodiversity. In addition to these two components, I also conduct basic research on animal movement. The differences in nature, approach, and subject matter of these components creates a unique and interesting combination of research opportunities that is rich biologically and intellectually, and likely to generate a productive synergy in terms of addressing the overarching theme of my research program.

The scientific approach is broadly based and employs a combination of theory, empirical and experimental analysis that requires a highly collaborative research program. Major breakthroughs in ecological understanding require that ecologists separated by traditional scientific divisions begin to communicate. Many of the systems that ecologists seek to understand do not strictly obey scientific boundaries (e.g., aboveground versus belowground, aquatic versus terrestrial), while many of the phenomena of interest simultaneously merge population, community and ecosystem processes (now all largely disparate areas of ecological research). Taken together, our lab seeks to address three major scientific questions: 1. What is the structure that underlies the biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems?; 2. Does this structure influence the stability, function and maintenance of diverse assemblages of species? and; 3. Does this structure influence the way we manage biological resources? Developing the answers to these important questions places society in a position to interpret how large-scale human perturbations impact the biodiversity and function of ecological systems. People in this lab range from being very mathematical to very field oriented; however, all overlap in that they are interested in developing conceptual advances in ecology.

We study the mechanisms regulating genetic diversity and phenotypic evolution in plants, and, conversely, how evolutionary processes (drift, gene flow, adaptation, genetic diversity) affect the ecological function of populations (reproduction, growth, persistence, extinction). To understand these relationships we focus mainly on plant genetic systems, those reproductive attributes that govern mutation, gamete formation, pollination, fertilization, and organization of genetic diversity in populations.

In particular I am concentrating on two major components of the evolutionary process. Firstly, I study how genetic differences among individuals lead to variation in the numbers and survival of their offspring (fitness). Secondly, I determine how those genetic differences can become partitioned between populations when they begin to diverge genetically into different species. Salmonid fishes (Atlantic salmon, Arctic charr, rainbow trout, brook charr) continue to be the models for most of this work because their biology makes them interesting candidates for genetic analysis.

Interests: The major focus of my current research is life history of turtles, particularly the relationships among age at first reproduction, reproductive output, body size and growth rates and longevity. I am also especially interested in the changes in correlation among life history measures when these measures are examined among species, among populations, among individuals and within individuals over time.
