WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN THE EXEMPT GROUP

Become Part of a Team
The University encourages teamwork in the day-to-day operations of its business.  People who are team players are more effective and show that they are cooperative.  Being a "wild card" does not show that you are independent, it shows that you are not a team player.

Would you like to assist the University on Job Evaluations, Health and Safety, Pensions and Benefits, and other areas that impact strongly on your life?  You must be a member in good standing to participate on these committees.  Are you a team player?

The University Administration Would Prefer You Were Represented
The Human Resources Department is very busy, just as many departments are.  They have undergone the same downsizing and increased workloads that all of us have.  There are many instances when a call to a member of the Exempt Executive could save tying up the Human Resources Department with hours of unnecessary consultation.

But, the Exempt Executive are also busy.  Recently a non dues-paying member called to say she had received a dismissal letter and what could we do to help.  Regretfully, our answer was, "you are not a member in good standing, you likely should hire a lawyer."  This person will incur a large expense unnecessarily.   The situation would never have gone as far as it did were the Exempt Group to have intervened at an early stage.  Now we have a messy situation for the employee, her supervisor and the University Administration.  Remember, the Exempt Group IS NOT A CERTIFIED UNION, You must voluntarily join to get the benefits of membership.

Are You Concerned About Your Salary and Benefits?
Perhaps you are a single person without the financial burden of a family or aging parents and without any dependents, or in the foreseeable future - You can get by on whatever comes your way.  More likely you do have financial responsibilities and are struggling to get by on your salary, possibly delivering pizza at night to attempt to make up the shortfall in what you need to survive!

By not becoming a member in good standing you are saying to the University Administration, "I'm happy with whatever I get, so if you have extra money, give it to Faculty".  You are depriving your fellow workers of a strong voice to ensure that Exempt members get their fair share of the money available for raises.

Have Your Say
To Vote on matters relating to the Exempt Group, you must be a member in good standing.  The Exempt Group is the recognized representative of over 350 employees with the University of Guelph.  Wouldn't you like to take part in the process and have a vote?  Without a member card, you are not part of the team and not fully represented.
