
Strobilomyces strobilaceus Old Man of the Woods
Caps 5-15 cm, dry with thick blackish scales on a greyish to grey-brown ground, convex. Flesh white, staining red to black. Tubes white staining red then black. Stalks up to 13 cm tall by 3 cm wide, coloured as cap, hairy. Spore print black. Fruits on ground or dead wood. Also known as Strobilomyces floccopus. Edible. Photo: Brian Shelton
