Geastrum quadrifidum                Four-Footed Earthstar

The Four-Footed Earthstar often has often more than four feet,  but that's life!   It's a small earthstar and seldom exceeds 5 cm from tip to toe.   It is easily recognized by the purplish spore sac and is one of the few species where the spore sac is much taller than broad.  It is widespread but not common and I have found it frequently under conifers but only in one particular wood near Guelph.
