Pluteus umbrosus

The free gills, pinkish spore print and growth on rotting wood identify this muahroom as belonging to the genus Pluteus.  Amongst Pluteus species it is recognized by the handsome markings on the cap.

Caps are 4-9 cm, convex, becoming flat with broad umbo, dark brown, radially-streaked with tiny blackish scales.   Stalks are up to 9 cm tall by 1.5 cm wide, slender and coloured as the cap.  Gills are free, close, white, becoming pinkish.  The spore print is pink. Widespread and not uncommon.  This mushroom is recognized by the distinctive markings on the cap.   It fruits on  well-rotted hardwood logs. Edible.
