Fruitbodies are black to brownish black, rubbery when fresh, leathery when dry, up to 4 cm across, smooth to top-shaped, and with a flat or slightly concave disc. This sac fungus is widespread but not common and it fruits on fallen trunks and branches of hardwoods.
