Helicocephalum oligosporum

(from MycoAlbum CD by George Barron see www.mycographics.com)

This remarkable fungus, discovered by Drechsler, produces an erect sporophore that becomes helicoid at the apex.  The available protoplasm is shunted into the helicoid portion which becomes swollen and segmented. Each segment matures to form a  large, red-brown spore. The helicoid chain of spores disarticulates and the spores form a ball at the apex of the sporophore.  The spores are about 40 microns by 20-25 microns.
