Helvella coria

Fruitbodies (apothecia) are black, saucer-shaped to cup-shaped and up to 2 cm aross. Cups are smooth on the inside and roughened (coarsely hairy) on the outside.   Stalks are cylindrical, brown to blackish, and up to 1.5 cm tall.  This Sac fungus prefers sandy soils or gravel beside woodland trails. Not common in Ontario.  Also known as Cyathipodia corium.
